Eco-Friendly Christmas Gifts for Wildlife Lovers – Helping Garden Birds This Winter
Share
As the plight of nature becomes more and more widely known by the day, people are leaning into nature focused gifts more than ever. People seem to be increasingly more conscious around not needing wasteful gifts, and more focused on helping our beautiful wildlife.
Bird-Feeding Gift Ideas for Christmas
Bird seed gifts and bird feeding giftboxes have massively increased over the last couple of years. There are many gifts on the market that sell beautifully chosen bird seed, hanging suet feeders etc. There are also many bird related gifts that contain bird feeders, roosting pouches, bird houses etc.
People are very aware of how much birds struggle in the cold winter months, meaning Christmas feels like the perfect time to gift someone a wildlife gift box.
Why it's so important to help birds out in Winter
Why Winter is so hard for birds
- Up to half of all small garden birds may die during a harsh winter (British Trust for Ornithology estimate). Food scarcity and cold nights are the main causes.
- Insects, seeds and berries are much less available between November and March, meaning birds struggle to find enough energy each day.
- Small birds such as wrens, goldcrests and long-tailed tits can lose up to 10% of their body weight overnight just staying warm.
- Long, cold nights mean longer fasting periods — birds must eat as much as possible during short daylight hours to survive.
- Climate change is altering migration. Many species that used to migrate to the UK now “short-stop” and stay in northern Europe, leading to fewer winter visitors here.
What we've decided to put together
We recognised that lots of companies sell bird seed gifts and bird feeder gifts, and lots of companies also sell wildflower gifts and gardening gifts to help wildlife, but very few combine the two. We've put together a bird gift box that feeds and supports the birds in UK gardens this winter, while also containing wildflower seedballs that grow flowers specifically designed to help them in future, with direct and indirect food sources. We firmly believe in a 'feed the now, grow the future' ethos!
